The Importance of Self-Education in 2023

Self-education is the modern-day essential.

Having been in the tech industry for roughly two years, I regard it as one of the most valuable lessons I’ve acquired.

In today’s evolving world, with its technological advancements, the landscape is constantly changing. Given the rise of AI and automation tools, I’m convinced that those who invest in self-education are rarely, if ever, replaceable.

Having recently graduated, I believe that the school system, particularly in tech, lags by at least five years. This isn’t a criticism; it’s impossible to build a teachable academic system if the content within changes every 6 months.

In addition to this problem comes the rise of AI.

The user who’s job is to do the same task every single day will get replaced because that’s what AI and Tech are good at in general, repeated tasks.

This is where the significance of self-education becomes evident, offering solutions to these challenges:

  • Contrary to the school system, fresh online courses/resources about the ‘new’ are always available.
  • A diversified skillset allows you to be irreplaceable by AI. In contrast to the school system, online courses allow you to learn a variety of interests/skills. For instance, while a developer might primarily focus on coding, they can also venture into video editing.
  • An added advantage is the profound sense of self-worth, knowing you’re genuinely beneficial to those around you.

I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by a professional system that gives me the opportunity not only to better my skills and learn, but also to put what I’ve learned into practice and provide value, even though, purely from an academic standpoint, I couldn’t do so.

I derive immense satisfaction from the knowledge that my daily efforts are enhancing the productivity and ease of my colleagues, and this is all thanks to self-education.
